What is NATSIAC?

NATSIAC stands for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council. There is a NATSIAC Canon which is part of General Synod’s rules and regulations that governs the membership of NATSIAC and gives us guidelines as to how we work and function. NATSIAC is affiliated with the Anglican Indigenous Network, internationally.

Who are we?

We are bishops, priests, deacons and lay members of the Anglican Church of Australia, who are Indigenous. We are Indigenous representatives from every Diocese in the Anglican Church of Australia and are appointed by each Diocesan bishop.

When does NATSIAC meet?

NATSIAC meets annually and the Executive of NATSIAC meet every six months.

What does NATSIAC do?

NATSIAC is an Indigenous voice in the Anglican Church. We support each other and make recommendations to the wider Church on Indigenous issues.

What has been happening?

NATSIAC has a position on General Synod. We give an Indigenous perspective to the Anglican Church forum especially those issues that involve support and social justice for Indigenous communities and ministries. We are currently presenting a Covenant to the General Synod in 2007.

How is NATSIAC funded?

NATSIAC is funded by General Synod and Dioceses throughout Australia. We also receive donations from parishes. We are always working on a very tight budget and welcome financial support.

Recent Activities

The Council last met in Cairns in August 2007.  The Council continued its work on:

  • a strategic plan to assist the Council achieve its goals and objectives

  • financial support

  • representation at the Anglican Indigenous Network, due to meet in Canada in May 2007.

Resources

The following resources have been developed by the Faith Communities for Reconciliation, and the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ecumenical Commission (NATSIEC) of the National Council of Churches in Australia (NCCA) for use as we pray about reconciliation and during the week of Prayer and Reconciliation (27 May - 3 June 2007) and NAIDOC Week (8-14 July 2007).

NATSIAC has made available several resources for 2007 including:
  • a blessing of the four directions
  • a gum tree meditation
  • ideas and suggestions for services
The Prayer Diary is a way that NATSIEC hopes will strengthen links among Indigenous peoples in our churches and between Indigenous Christians and the wider Christian community. This contains readings and prayer areas and reflections for each day, linking in also to key dates in the Indigenous calendar.

There is also NATSIAC News, a newsletter that highlights the ongoing work and stories of faith by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
